Egis Expert on the Value of Water: How to Change Attitudes Toward the Most Vital Resource
An article by Andrii Bikats, Chief Water Supply and Sanitation Engineer at Egis in Ukraine, titled "Low Price – High Value," was published in the Ukrainian socio-political media Gazeta.ua.
The material tells about the hidden water losses that occur every day due to the deterioration of the infrastructure. The figures are striking – to deliver 80 or 100 liters of water to the consumer, the water utility may lose the same amount during transportation. For example, if a Ukrainian city with one million residents consumes 80,000 cubic meters of water per day, an additional 80,000 cubic meters are lost into the ground.
Andrii shares his own experience and reflections on how Ukrainian cities, with very low water tariffs, can manage the modernization of water supply and wastewater systems, which requires significant investments. International technical and financial assistance is crucial, but equally important is changing our perception of water – not as something cheap and infinite, but as one of the planet’s most valuable resources. Water scarcity is becoming one of the most pressing global challenges, exacerbated by climate change.
