ESG Principles: A Cornerstone of Egis Leadership in 2024
Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles—focusing on "environment," "social responsibility," and "corporate governance"—were first articulated in their modern form by Kofi Annan, the former UN Secretary-General. His vision encouraged major global companies to incorporate these criteria into their strategies, particularly to combat climate change. Since their emergence in the early 2000s, ESG principles have gained significant traction, and today, ESG ratings are a key measure of market leadership and sustainable development.
ESG principles have long been an integral part of Egis's brand. Climate change, human rights, and the ethical impact of our activities are of immense importance to us.
Since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine—an act that shattered ethical norms, violated international law and human rights, and caused massive environmental damage—ESG policies have taken on new significance. During this war, Egis chose not to leave Ukraine. Instead, we strengthened our presence and doubled down on our efforts to support, rebuild, and restore the country. As we reflect on our activities in 2024, we wish to highlight the inspiring events and moments that defined previous year.
Since the very beginning of the full-scale invasion, Egis has been actively involved in the restoration of critical infrastructure, including bridges, essential utilities, and urban transport. Our efforts also encompass transformational projects such as the protection of energy facilities, the expansion of the Kharkiv metro, Remote Damage Assessment caused by military aggression in Chernihiv Region, the EU-funded APENA3 project “Strengthening the capacity of regional and local administrations for implementation and enforcement of EU environmental and climate change legislation and development of infrastructure projects”), and the Restoration of the Water Supply System in Mykolaiv under the UMIP project.
Additionally, our work extends to restoring schools and pediatric hospitals. These initiatives are aimed not only at recovery but also at laying the foundation for a resilient and advanced Ukraine.
- In 2024, Egis participated for the third time in the international ReBuild Ukraine conference held in Warsaw. Laurent Germain, CEO of Egis Group, President of MEDEF Ukraine, and a member of the Business Advisory Board, joined a panel discussion during the EU-Ukraine Investment Conference. This event, organized by the European Commission and the Government of Ukraine, aimed to explore pathways for revitalizing Ukraine’s business environment and attracting investments, even amidst the ongoing conflict.
- Strengthening effective coordination in Ukraine’s recovery efforts and addressing challenges in the reconstruction sector were also key topics at the Recovery Construction Forum Ukraine in Kyiv. Egis proudly partnered with this event, which brought together over 2,000 participants to discuss solutions for rebuilding the country.
- Human rights are inviolable, and every life is priceless. As a values-driven company, Egis actively contributes to initiatives aimed at preserving lives and ensuring the health and safety of people.
The world was shocked by the devastating images of Kyiv’s Ohmatdyt Children’s Hospital, damaged by a missile strike. At the time, the hospital was sheltering 627 children, with many young patients injured and two tragically losing their lives. In response, businesses, NGOs, and ordinary citizens came together to offer support. Egis joined this vital effort, contributing 200,000 UAH through the CCI France Ukraine initiative to help restore the hospital’s ENT department and laboratory.
- Our team proudly supported the international training program "Limb Deformity Correction with a Hexapod," organized by the Razom Co-Pilot Project (Razom for Ukraine) in collaboration with the Ukrainian Association of Orthopedic Surgeons and with the support of the Zakarpattia Regional Children’s Hospital.
Egis provided the complex logistics of delivering ten circular fixation systems provided by Smith+Nephew for the event. This training aimed to equip Ukrainian orthopedic surgeons with advanced techniques and practices to save and restore limbs, further contributing to the enhancement of medical care during these challenging times.
- Egis employees became blood donors by participating in the Halloween Blood Donation Day organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine. Thanks to the efforts of the organizers and partners, 32 liters of blood were collected to save lives.
- Egis contributed to the purchase and delivery of medical supplies for stabilization points and supported the charity run "Running for Those in Boots" organized by the Gurkit Foundation.
One of the key principles supported by Egis is caring for the environment and a firm commitment to addressing global challenges such as climate change. Virtually every project we undertake includes an environmental component. We take pride in bringing together not only the best experts but also like-minded individuals who share the common goal of making the world a better place and transforming Ukraine into a resilient nation equipped with cutting-edge technologies to meet today’s challenges.
- In 2024, the team of the EU-funded APENA3 project completed significant work on developing the first regional climate change adaptation strategies for three regions of Ukraine, along with their implementation plans. These extensive studies are innovative not only for Ukraine but also for Europe.
- As part of APENA3, our experts made a major contribution to the reform of the waste management sector in Ukraine by developing regional waste management plans for three pilot regions and over 30 regulations aimed at implementing the reform and aligning Ukrainian legislation with EU standards. Supporting innovative solutions and technologies is one of Egis' priorities. In the fall of 2024, the company became the general sponsor of International GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Day in Cherkasy. This scientific conference aimed to explore the power and capabilities of computer technologies for analyzing and mapping real-world objects and the events occurring around them. Our experts shared their experiences, as Egis actively uses GIS in its projects. Specifically, in projects related to transport systems, our experts create GIS maps to analyze the environmental and social impacts. In the APENA3 project, during the development of regional climate change adaptation strategies and climate scenarios for the coming century, our experts created over 1,000 maps using GIS tools, demonstrating the impact of climate change on various socio-economic sectors in the Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, and Mykolaiv regions.
